Lucky Leprechaun Hats (St. Patrick’s Day Craft)

According to family lore, and a few cousins who are family genealogists and go into great detail at every family reunion,  one branch of my  family was Scotch-Irish. They immigrated to the colonies during the Irish famine of 1740. Maybe that’s why I try to make treats for my family on St. Patrick’s Day, or it could be I just like a holiday that gives me an opportunity to pinch people if they are not wearing green.  I haven’t gotten to pinch anyone since 4th grade, but I like to keep my options open.  To celebrate our Irish side, I came up with the cutest idea; Lucky Leprechaun Hats.  I purchased my supplies at Dollar Tree, making me feel thrifty and like the Luck of the Irish was upon me.

Here’s what you need to make four containers:
One package of Four 16 ounce plastic serving containers with green lids
4 packages (4 ounce each) green licorice (or candy or toy of your choice)
1 roll green ribbon
4 inches gold ribbon

If you’ve read any of my craft posts, you know I like easy crafts; crafts that don’t have a lot of steps and won’t cause any physical injury.  This one is so simple the kids can make most of it themselves. Start with a 4 pack of Easy Seal Plastic Storage containers with green lids.  I picked the sixteen ounce size because they had more of the shape of a leprechaun hat. I also picked up 2 bags of green licorice strips, but any type of candy or toys would work.

I cut the licorice into strips, prompting Bryan to ask me why I had green beans sitting in containers on our counter.  I still liked the look and added them to the containers. After turning the containers upside down I measured enough green ribbon to wrap around the container and glued it into place. This made my hat band. I added a half inch of gold ribbon to the front for the buckle. Voila! Done with no injuries.

How are you celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this year?  Do you have a favorite easy craft to make?

I am partnering with Dollar Tree to bring you easy crafts and recipes each month this year, but all opinions are my own.

  20. For St. Patrick’s Day I always try to cook up a big pot of corned beef and cabbage. Just recently I wrote an article about that and discovered it is actually an Irish-American tradition. It seems that in the early days of Irish immigration, the Irish were very poor. Corned beef was one of the only meats they could afford, so they ate a lot of it. And cabbage? That was coincidental. Cabbage is a cool-weather vegetable so it was perfect for St. Patrick’s Day!
