Good Eats: Southside Saloon and Bistro Chattanooga, Tenn

The Southside Saloon and Bistro is one of those unassuming local eateries located off of the beaten path.  It has a small nondescript sign, located on the side of the building, and is easy to miss.  I wasn’t aware of its existence on a side street in downtown Chattanooga until I saw it on Restaurant.com.  The Bistro is only open for breakfast and lunch, but serves a variety of burgers and meat and veggie plates that are worth the trip.

The décor is plain Jane, with a small bar area, a few tables, and some round tables with bar stools in the corner.  The glass topped tables had vintage postcards from the Chattanooga area scattered around under the glass and I spent a few minutes reading them while deciding what to order. The waitress was friendly and attentive, offering information on the menu and the house specials.  It was a tough choice but I finally decided to go with a classic Southern dish, Country Fried Steak, smothered with white gravy, along with two sides. I chose the sautéed mushrooms and white beans. The dish was rounded out with a slice of jalapeno cornbread.  My daughter, who has Celiac, decided on the four veggie platter with Turnip greens, mashed potatoes, white beans and cucumber salad. She was also given a slice of Jalapeno cornbread, which was quickly devoured by one of the guys.

The men in the family went with sandwiches; the Bleu Moon burger, the Bacon Cheeseburger and the Reuben. These were served with either fries or potato chips.  Bryan spent several minutes commenting on how “good this Bacon Blue cheeseburger is!” When he complimented the waitress on the food, she informed us they buy local beef and also purchase ingredients from the Chattanooga Farmer’s Market.  We could tell the food was fresh and it made us feel good to know they helped support local farmers.

The prices are extremely reasonable; my Country Fried Steak meal was only $6.95 and was a generous portion.  After our meal, the entire family decided we would love to eat here again-and soon! Southside Saloon and Bistro is available for private events in the evenings.
