Sick Kitty? Mitzie’s Story with WalgreensRX

Mitzie
#WalgreensRX, Cbias,

I would love to say Mitzie came into our life in an unusual or spectacular way, but that’s not the case. We had recently lost our cat, Snuffy, and the kids were devastated. To console them, Bryan suggested we make a visit to the local animal shelter, which is a high kill shelter due to no one adopting cats, to search for our next pet.  “Since black cats are the least  likely to get adopted, let’s rescue one of those,” he suggested.  When we entered the overflowing cat room, his eyes zeroed in on a small black kitten. “How about this one?’ he suggested.  I was searching for cats that looked like Snuffy and generally ignoring him, when the kitten began climbing the cage, reaching out her paw and attempting to get our attention.  “Look,” my son said, “she wants us to hold her.” We retrieved her from the cage. She immediately curled up in my son’s arms and began purring. “I want this one!” my son said.  The animal shelter worker took on look at her and said, “This is your lucky day, cat.”  We filled out the paperwork, took her home and christened her Mitzie.  What we didn’t know was we had just adopted a sick pet.  After a vet visit and some medications for pets to treat parasites, I thought she would be okay. I was wrong.

I’m not sure if she was traumatized by life at the shelter or what, but she has always been a scaredy cat. Loud noises, things that go bump, other cats, you name it, she is scared of it. We thought she was beginning to recover from some of the trauma until we had her spayed.  When she returned home she immediately began licking herself obsessively and pulling out her fur.  We took her back to the vet. “I think it is hormones,” he said, “I’ll prescribe some steroids.”  From that time forward we have had what we call “Mitzie Medicine Monday.” Once a week she has to take a steroid pill to help balance her hormones.  When the licking and hair pulling continued, we took her to the holistic vet.  We were informed she had a nervous disposition *although we already knew that* and perhaps kitty prozac would help.   Since the bald cat look was not appealing, we agreed to try the prozac treatment, much to the amusement of our family. “Hahaha! You have to be the only people I know who has a depressed cat!”

Naturally, we had to get her medicine filled and refilled.  Surprisingly, she takes the same medications as humans, just as a lower dose.  We had been getting her medication at our vet’s office, until we realized we could have the same prescriptions filled at Walgreens, often at a lower cost.  Because she has regular refills, we could set her up on our family plan and manage her prescriptions online, even signing her up for refill reminders! Pretty cool, huh? This is a big help because sometimes I am so frazzled I forget to refill my own prescriptions, much less hers. I can pick up her prescriptions at my local Walgreens too! Did I mention I can earn Balance Rewards too?

  1. Sounds like Mitzie has been through a lot! Glad you found Walgreens pharmacy refill reminders helpful to stay on top of medications! #client

  2. Awww… poor Mitzie! I have a soft spot for black cats. My absolute favorite was my childhood cat that I nursed from the runt of the litter to a big boy. I agree that the refill reminders are nice. I also have a hard time remembering to refill everything for my family, let alone the pets. #client

  3. I won’t tell you anything new, but it is just the same with everything in life.
You’d think history showes us anything, but no.
Feel free to disagree but the world changes, and none of us have no control whatsoever over it.
For instance, imagine Barack had any balls to put Russian bear to his place, but it seems like it’s never happening, welcome WW3.
    Awesome post, thanks!

  4. I never thought about that? Then again I don’t have pets so I would never even think about that. This is so good of my friends who do have pets. I will definitely pass along.

  5. It’s great that Walgreens have this even for your pets. It’s really hard because you can’t really time when you’re going to get sick. It’s sad that there aren’t really more clinics that are open 24/7.

  6. I had a total scaredy cat too. She’s 10 now and finally mellowing out, but for many years she flinched if I even looked at her. Love that Walgreens has pet meds!

  7. Our dog Buster was an emotional wreck when we rescued him too and is also on fluoxetine.
I get my scripts from Walgreens but I support my vet hospital by buying my pets meds from them.

  8. I am not a pet person and that is why I don’t know a single thing about pets. It is however nice to know that Walgreen’s fulfills pet prescriptions. It must be very convenient for you.

  9. I didn’t know Walgreens offered this. Sounds like a great service for those with pets. Especially since there are a lot of locations open 24 hours a day. And I love the names Mitzie and Snuffy!

  43. Amanda @ Erickson and Co.

  47. That is awesome that you can get her prescriptions filled at Walgreens. My pets at this time are fairly healthy and not taking prescriptions.

  48. I’m so sorry about the loss of your cat. My mother’s cat passed away last year after 12 years and it was devastating for all of us since we grew up with him.

  49. Helene Cohen Bludman

I didn’t know about Walgreens having pet medications! I will have to check to see if they carry the medication my dog is on.

  50. Totally did not know Walgreens offered this service! That is good to know!

  51. I just recently learned that Walgreen’s can fill pet prescriptions. They cost much less there than at our vet’s office. Now all of our family medications are filled at Walgreen’s, even our pet’s. It’s very convenient.

  52. I am sorry to hear your kitty had such a rough start. One of my dogs was a rescue and I quickly realized she was a very sick puppy. I never think to go to Walgreens for pet meds. I always fill them at the Vet’s office.

  53. First so glad you are helping her through this, I have heard so many return animals for things like this. I never think to go to Walgreens, I will check it out for one of my cats that is on a lifelong medication. We knew she was sick when we got her and would need special care, she was returned repeatedly because of it and yet she is the sweetest cat I have ever met.

  54. Your kitty is beautiful! I didn’t realize Walgreens offered a pet pharmacy program – I wonder why my Vet keeps filling the prescriptions at the office? Hmmm…next time I will know better!

  55. I had no idea that there was a pet pharmacy at Walgreens. That’s good!

  56. I love your pictures, Mitzie is cute! I had no idea that Walgreens did this – I will totally check into this!

  57. Mitzie is a beautiful cat and looks very friendly. I’ve got myself a lot of pets and they’re like family to me.

  58. That is really cool. So easy to add a pet.

  59. That is really funny!! I would have done the same thing for any of my animals though if they needed it. Our animals are part of the family. 🙂

  60. I am glad to hear that we can pick up pet RX at walgreens. Sorry your kitty needed meds.

  61. I Never Knew Walgreens Carried Pet Meds This Is AWESOME To Know For In The Future!!!

  62. Oh how cute is Mitzie – what a great service they offer. And poor kitty being depressed – so good that you can easily fill her prescription. x

  63. Aw depressed and scared cats make me sad. :((( I can only imagine the trauma they go through to reach that point. Btw – I also always tell people to adopt the black cats… my mom is very superstitious and she thinks I’m having everyone cursed!

  64. I had no idea that Walgreens offered this but I am so glad that they do!

  65. I love that Walgreens takes care of every memeber of my family!

  66. Aww poor kitty! It is great to know my local walgreens will have something needed for my pet as well.

  67. I’m all for convenience and a lower cost, I didn’t know they offered this! Thanks for the heads up!

  68. Well she looks great now! That’s funny she’s on the family med. plan. Cool, but still worth a chuckle. 🙂

  69. Jessica @EatSleepBe

Not having a pet yet, I had no idea that Walgreens would be so helpful for families with them. So good to know!

  70. I also had no idea that Walgreens had pet medication! Good to know!

  71. Oh that’s awesome! I had no idea Walgreens did that, but that makes it so much more convenient. Thanks for the information.

  72. Ha… I never thought about animals taking the same medications as people. Well, it stands to reason that you would use Walgreens to get their script filled.

  73. We used to have three dogs (they have long since passed) and we always purchased their medication at the vet. Our local vets have the market cornered – they charge one price for the visit if you’re buying your medication there, another price if you want to take the prescription with you…

  74. I had no idea that Walgreens had Pet prescriptions. That is great to know that there are options out there other than getting them direct through the vet.
