Mexican Sugar Restaurant

I eat a lot of traditional Latin American dishes, thanks to some Latina friends.  Not only are the dishes delicious, they urge me to, “Comer! Comer!” (Eat! Eat!) With my love affair of these dishes, I was thrilled to learn, during a recent trip to Plano, Texas, we would be eating at a traditional Mexican restaurant, Mexican Sugar.  Located in a bustling area of town, the shops at Legacy,  it was a short walk from our hotel, the Marriott.  I was glad we had made reservations, because this place was hopping! Not only was inside and outside, a line of people were waiting for empty tables. Because the restaurant was so packed, I expected a long wait, but in minutes we had fresh tortilla chips with a variety of homemade salsas and an amazing Queso Blancho dip, plus our appetizer and drink order had been taken.

The atmosphere in the restaurant was casual, with a definite Southwest vibe in the decor. I only wish I could have gotten a picture of the decorated deer head over the door. How often do you see a deer wearing sunglasses or a bandanna? The one problem I had was the noise. It was so loud we had to practically scream across the table or to the person sitting beside us to be heard. I left with a sore throat!

We started our meal with Arepas, something like a piece of corn cake and topped with a savory meat filling, slow roasted barbacoa, slaw and cilantro crema.  These were tasty and filling enough (to me) that I didn’t need to order a main course after having one of these.

Of course, I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to order a main course, and decided to try the lump crab enchiladas.   Bursting with gulf crab and roasted corn, they were topped with queso fresco, pico de gallo, poblano crema and salsa roja. My sides were heirloom black beans and cilantro-lime rice.  While they were tasty, I was too full to appreciate them, since I was served three! The heirloom black beans and cilantro lime rice were flavorful and could have easily been a meal on their own.

I would definitely revisit if given an opportunity, but I’d either order only an appetizer or an entree, otherwise there was too much food.  Have you ever visited Mexican Sugar?

Disclosure: My meal was paid for by Dr. Pepper Snapple during a recent trip. However, I was not asked to write a review and all opinions are my own.

  1. I’ve eaten there once before with my daughter and once with a friend. We ordered the sangria along with our food and it was AMAZING! As a matter of fact, I was googling a copycat recipe for it when I found your site! So even though it has been a while… And my memory isn’t too good these days, the food was fabulous! Definitely give it a try! Especially the Sangria! It was fruity but not too sweet, with just a bit of a bite from the red wine. Pure heaven!
