Get Well with AmWell

(This post written by my daughter, Brittany.)

When you’re chronically ill, you have a lot of appointments. So many, in fact, that you start to joke about being a Professional Patient. It’s practically a full time job keeping track of where you need to be and at what time.

But what happens when you catch a “normal people sickness” and you’re too sick to leave the house? You should probably see a doctor, but the idea of dragging yourself to a waiting room full of germs and having to sit under the fluorescent lights makes your head throb even more than it already does. You could wait it out, yeah, and risk winding up in the ER. Or, you could use AmWell.

Simply download the AmWell app on your iPhone or iPad and quickly, securely see a licensed, board certified doctor in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Pretty cool, right? This turned out to be a real lifesaver (okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration) over the summer when I had appointments with different specialists almost every day. My little brother had come down with a sinus infection, and I can’t drive, so no one could take him to the doctor. Enter AmWell.

Just waiting out an appointment, like you do.
Just waiting out an appointment, like you do.

Thanks to AmWell, we were able to find a physician, get him diagnosed, and even get a prescription sent to our local pharmacy! Not to mention, they were able to give us tips on soothing his sore throat, headache, and stuffy ears.

Each appointment on AmWell costs $49, which is more than at our usual doctor, but the fact that it’s available 24/7/365 makes up for the small price difference. Another bonus is that you can pick your own provider on AmWell! Pick your area, and AmWell will give you a list of providers to choose from.

Other than primary care and specialist physicians, you can also choose to see registered dietitians or licensed behavioral therapists. No wonder AmWell is the most popular telehealth app in the world!

If you’d like to try it out for yourself, you can download it on the app store.

  18. Amwell sounds like a useful app to have and not too expensive either. I personally don’t like going to the doctor office but I really need to so this would be something perfect for me. I wonder if I can get prescriptions filled/refilled through the doctors on Amwell. That would be even more helpful for me. Thanks for telling us about it and for the code for the first visit being free.

This sounds like an awesome service. I would definitely consider using this if I couldn’t get out of the house to see my real doctor for some reason.
