Food Is Love: A Cat Story

Daisy
Daisy, Our Foster Kitty

Daisy, our foster cat, came to us in a terrified state. Abused by her former owners, she spent the first week in hiding, only venturing out to try to find small pieces of food. She had been left to find whatever scraps were available on her own. Skinny and small, she was the opposite of all our cats, who came running to greet us, expecting food. Encouraged by the administrators of the local rescue organization, we began to socialize her with small treats of food. Daisy has gained some weight since arriving at our house, but her situation made me realize how much we spoil our cats with treats. All I have to do is yell, “Who wants a treat?” and our cats come running and go to their assigned places to await their treat. Walking by the closet where the treats are stored will bring cats running & meowing, as if they have been deprived. It’s hard not to feed them when they are being so cute. The problem with this? Unfortunately, sometimes our “love” can lead to excess weight gain that can, over time, lead to health issues.

Trix the cat
Trix, our other foster cat, came to us believing food is love.

Most people want their pets to live a long life without health problems. To do this, the same as with humans, we have to feed them a balanced diet. When we overindulge our pets, it can lead to weight gain. Putting a pet on a diet is no fun. The sad expression on their faces when they want food is hard to bear. It feels like we are depriving them of our love. That’s why Hill’s invented their Metabolic Diet Food. It’s truly guilt free, allowing pets to indulge while still being able to lose weight. Definitely a win-win situation for everyone!

  1. We have a cat we rescued from our community pool – her siblings all are gone, likely eaten by dogs 🙁 So sad but glad that we have her here with us now.

  2. If I had chunky furry babies I’d want the best for them too! Your cats are too cute!

  3. Sounds like a really great offer to pet owners. thank you for sharing the news.

  4. I only had one chubby dog. I got 2 of them when they were pups and they were brothers. He was huskier and bigger boned. He was on the chubby side all the time. He ate a little more but essential the same as his brother. I think they are just like people with their metabolism and eating.

  5. We have a little min pin that has gotten slightly overweight and we are working on it. He has a big sister that can eat whatever she wants and keep her slim figure so it is a little hard on him, lol. The vet advised us to put the bigger dogs food up on a table where the min pin can’t reach it ( big sister is a grazer and takes all day to eat) and so we did. I can’t believe we didn’t think of doing that before but it is working!

  6. Aww, isn’t it heartbreaking when the animals are abused. It takes so much time to earn their trust and you feel so bad for them in the meantime. I will never understand it…

I agree with you on quality pet food. It really is important.

  7. I used to have a HUGE cat–25 pounds. He was truly “big boned” and didn’t eat much at all. He lived to the ripe age of 18. I miss him so much.

  8. AWw what cute kitties! We don’t have cats, but my kids have been wanting one for awhile

  9. Aww. I just want to squeeze those kitties. We are planning to get a rag doll once I finish nursing school. I really just love cats.

  10. These cat pictures are so cute! I love cats and currently have three living with me.

  11. I wish we could get our ornery, chunky cat to eat something that was good for him. He is so stubborn, and we have tried!

  12. First of all, your kitties are so pretty! Second of all, yes, our CoCo is a bit “fluffy”. Perhaps I should try this brand – right now she’s on a weight control, and the only treats she has are green beans (loves them) so I’m a bit at a loss. We’ll stick with it, though!

  13. That’s so lovely how you foster cats 🙂 It must be so hard to see the difference between abused cats and your own well-loved ones. I think my dogs need a bit more nutrition in their diets, so this looks really promising for me 🙂

  14. I have a dog and two cats. One cat loves to eat and is a bit on the pudgy side 🙂

  15. My cat is sucha fat boy. I am always trying to find something that will work for him.

  16. What pretty cats, sounds like a great healthy food option.

  17. Your cats are beautiful. I have two and they are my babies!

  18. beautiful animals. They look really healthy. My doggie is pretty healthy too. He is at his ideal body weight

  19. Awe, your little ones are way too cute. When my In-laws moved in with us, my FIL took our min-pin and made him so fat… I have been bugging him to put the poor guy on a diet and this just may work. Thanks so much

  20. We had to put our dog on a diet for a while, and it was so hard because she’d make that adorable face at us. It’s important to remember that food doesn’t equal love.

  21. First your family is great for helping this poor animal. We love Hills Sience here.

  22. Any kind of abuse makes me upset so glad to know there are every day hero’s out there.

  23. I would like to foster cat sadly my fur-daughter cannot stand any other kind of animals

  24. So cute! I want another kitty. Unfortunatel, our landlord doesn’t allow pets, but I love kitties so much. 🙂

  25. It’s very nice of you to have a foster pet. I have a few pet owner friends who because of their love for their pet always give them food when they ask.

  26. It’s so important to be aware that pets have dietary needs too and can become overweight. I’m glad this is being discussed so pet owners can become more aware.

  27. My cousins cat is pretty big. I will have to tell her about this as I am sure her cat will benefit from it.

  28. We have a rescue dog and I think it’s just as important for them as it is for cats. A balanced diet, I mean. Thank you for pointing this out as I know it’s just as important, if you love your pets.

  29. We are very picky about what we feed out kitties they are family.

  30. Oh gosh how fab are you having foster kitties! I don’t think I could ever let them go. My pooch eats Hills and it’s definitely done her the world of good 🙂 x

  31. Sounds like a great offer for pet owners! $25 is A LOT of savings!

  32. I don’t know much about cats, or have cats, but this seems like great info for cat owners!

  33. My Daughter has an older cat but she isn’t really overweight. She is very spoiled though and my Daughter has to cook her food which is chicken and rice.

  34. I am so glad you are helping Daisy! I hate to think about people abusing these beautiful pets. So happy you provide wonderful food for your pets.

  35. I don’t really think my dog is over weight, but I guess I will find out for sure if we need to switch to this when my Milo goes to the vet this summer 😉
