Ever After: A Musical For The Ages

My husband and I have always enjoyed going to the theatre together. When we lived in St. Louis, one of our favorite pastimes was seeing live shows at the Muny. From Mary Poppins to Les Miserables to Shrek: The Musical, the Muny had it all. When we returned to Georgia to settle down, we still caught a few shows. But once our daughter was born? We were resigned to watching movies on streaming channels, usually late at night when we were both exhausted.  A few of those movies caught our collective attention enough that we still quote them, even though we haven’t seen them in ages and rarely get to sit down together for a movie since our child is older and much more mobile. One of those was Ever After.

When Alliance Theatre reached out to us and asked if we’d like to see Ever After: A Musical for the Ages on their new Coca-Cola Stage, we jumped on the chance. We left our daughter with her grandparents for the day and made the nearly two-hour trek to Atlanta.

Alliance Theatre is located in the Woodruff Arts Center, which also houses the High Museum of Art and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. You can make a whole day out of just the High Museum of Art, but if you’re wanting to get a great date day in, you can check out the High Museum in the day and see an evening show at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra or Alliance Theatre! This area of town also houses a wealth of places to eat, including Twelve Eighty and the High Cafe. For vegans, you’re not too far from the famous Herban Fix.

Justin and I saw the 2:30 showing on Ever After: A Musical for the Ages. It was a full house, and if there were any empty seats I couldn’t find them! The musical is 2 and a half hours long, with a 15-minute intermission in the middle. You can use that intermission for a bathroom break, or you can check out the coffee, cocktails, and snacks for sale in the theatre. Or— like my husband— you can remain on the edge of your seat, waiting for the show to return from its cliff-hanger.

If you’re not familiar with the tale, Ever After is, at its heart, a Cinderella story. It’s just not the Cinderella story you’re familiar with. Featuring no magic and Leonardo da Vinci, this store is about a girl who can save herself. Danielle de Barbarac is no maiden in distress. Despite constant mistreatment from her stepmother and stepsisters, she’s witty, capable, educated, and headstrong. Played by Sierra Boggess of Broadway renown in this performance, you’ll fall in love with her instantly— and you won’t be surprised when the prince does, too.

Indeed, Ever After: A Musical for the Ages features an all-star cast, with many of the actors and actresses having performed in at least one Broadway Musical. Even those who haven’t been to Broadway are a treat to listen to. Within the first lines of the play, you find yourself drawn into their world. By intermission, you never want to leave the world of Danielle de Barbarac and her prince, Henry.

As my husband said after we left the theatre, “I felt every range of human emotion during that show.” We laughed when Danielle and Henry had an encounter with Bohemians. We cried when the Baroness, Danielle’s stepmother, locked her away to keep her from the ball— and from Henry. Our hearts leaped when Henry confessed his love for Danielle but was crushed by a ruse of mistaken identity. In fact, after the musical, we had a hard time pulling ourselves out of Danielle’s world.

Ever After: A Musical for the Ages is only on stage at Alliance Theatre until February 17, so if you want to see it, make plans now! Tickets run from $10 for orchestra seats to $500 to reserve 4 box seats (only sold as a set of 4.) This show is perfect for a Valentine’s Day date, a girls night out, or even to take your older child— this show is recommended for ages 8 and up.

I wasn’t able to get any pictures of the Alliance Theatre due to the rain and we weren’t allowed to take pictures of the production inside, but it is definitely worth seeing!
