My Egg Basket Flower Container

I have been attempting to collect antiques since I was a teen. With big tastes and a small budget, I became interested in “picking” through other people’s trash in old barns, sheds and storage buildings to find something I could convert into treasure. Now that I have teens I drag them along with me on my foraging expeditions. When they were younger there was a general round of complaints, but now sometimes they surprise themselves with their finds. I hear questions like, “What kind of furniture do we have in Pawpaw and Grandmother’s barn?” or “That’s cute. Where did you find that?” Picking can be hard and thirsty work so we try to keep some snacks on hand, including Capri Sun Big Pouch coolers. My children enjoyed Capri Sun when they were younger, but as they grew older they had to drink several to be refreshed. The new Big Pouches are designed with a teen in mind.

My “pick” before its transformation.

On a recent pick through my father in law’s barn, I came across an old egg basket. I had been looking for something to make a fall decoration for my porch and I knew this would be perfect. After being told by my mother-in-law I could have it “as long as I didn’t try to bring it back when I was finished with it,” I took it home. It was in good shape for its age so I didn’t have to do any rust removal. I used a can of green spray paint to give it an update and then filled it with hay I found in my brother in law’s barn. I figured since my son had helped with 1200 bales, he wouldn’t mind sharing a small amount. I made a small space in the middle of the hay and added a potted mum. Voila! I had an adorable porch decoration that cost me $7 for the paint and the pot of mums.

Make your own picking kit before you go.

If you are thinking of attempting picking, be sure to make a picking kit before you go. I include a few staples in mine; a pen and notebook for recording where and when I find my treasures, a flashlight for examining the objects, gloves (you never know what might jump out at you in old barns), and a magnifying glass for up close examination. This helps with finding hairline fractures that might now be visible otherwise. Also, since picking can take a while, include some Capri Sun big Pouch Maui Cooler or Capri Sun Big Pouch Fruit Punch, a favorite of my teens, and some snack crackers.

  35. I love to collect old stuff from my surrounding . Last time I went to search , I found a stone that was heart shaped . I usually go kit less because I explore very little 🙂

  36. I love that you made this from an old egg basket that you found in a barn. I just bought Mums last weekend, but didn’t do anything as creative as this!

(It sounds like you have a couple of barns that you can treasure hunt in. That’s awesome!)

I will have to look for the bigger Capri Suns….I usually buy the standard size. (My kids are getting older now and would love these.)

  37. That turned out so nice!!! I am no good at this — every time I come home with something that requires a project, I end up just staring at it blankly. I will leave it to you! 😉

  38. I love that basket. We haven’t gone picking before, but my mom found a dresser at a garage sale and sanded it down/painted it. It looks really nice and I am totally envious.
We love Capri Suns too. I was thinking of getting some for Trick Or Treaters.

  39. What a cute project. I like that basket a lot.

  40. My son is 3 years old and he recently had a Capri Sun and thought that it was the best thing EVER! It was the funniest thing. He drank it all at once and then told us that it was really good! He wanted more. 🙂

Your project looks great! What a fun idea.

  41. I love the top image.

  46. I love drinks and snacks that are quick and easy to take with me. We love yard sales so I always have to come up with ideas for our quick to go food and drinks.
My Hubs would love to get the chance to meet Mike Wolfe since he watches him so much on American Pickers.

That old egg basket works great for your flowers… good idea!!

  47. This is a fun project; I love how it turned out and isn’t it fun to find trash and turn it into treasure? Love doing that and LOVE watching American Pickers on the History Channel; my Teens are also addicted to the Capri Sun Big Pouch…. YUP, the post is ALL me… thanks for sharing
