Wild West Party Ideas with the Lone Ranger

I received a copy of The Lone Ranger for review purposes. All opinions are my own.

Need to take a break from the hectic pace of the holidays? How about settling in for a family movie night and some fun Wild West ideas with The Lone Ranger, to be released on Blu-ray, DVD + Digital Copy on December 17th,  because how can an evening spent with Johnny Depp be anything but fun?  Start with  a Wild West meal.  It doesn’t have to be fancy, just some good home cooking, like Barbque , baked beans and macaroni and cheese.

Baked Beans

Want to encourage creativity in the kids? Find a cardboard box (use one of those that you have received for Christmas or an old shoe box) and allow the kids to draw an Old West town on the box with markers, or if you are feeling brave, watercolors.  Before you begin viewing, allow the kids to make a cardboard star so they can be rangers too.

While viewing the movie, you might need a snack.  This peppermint hot cocoa will help hit the spot.  Just mix 4 ounces melted white chocolate with 2 tablespoons each condensed milk and heavy cream.  Bring the mixture to a boil and add a drop of vanilla flavoring and a crushed peppermint candy cane. Stir into one pint of warmed milk and top with a marshmallow.  Yum! It would be a cowboy’s delight.

I do have a few thoughts on The Lone Ranger.  It is rated PG-13 and for good reason. There are a couple of scenes with graphic brutality. The one where the outlaw killed The Lone Ranger’s brother stands out. It made me slightly squeamish when I saw the movie in theaters and when I watched it on Blu-Ray.  Much of the humor is sarcastic and aimed at adults and would probably go over a younger child’s head.   Included on the release are some extras that are worth a look too; bloopers, deleted scenes, Riding the Rails of the Lone Ranger, Becoming a Cowboy and Arnie’s Western Road trip.

Have you seen The Lone Ranger? What did you think?

  13. I’m looking forward to seeing it. It seems like it got knocked by critics, but I remember hearing Quentin Tarantino saying he felt it really got a bum rap for no good reason and that it was good.

  14. When my kids were younger, we had family night every Friday. Usually we had dinner with dessert and played games. Sometimes we would watch a special movie. If it was a movie night, dinner and dessert were always themed. Those were great times full of un and lots of memories! 🙂
