“Mom, my eye hurts,” my daughter informed me. My first thought was, “How does she always wake me up around 3 AM?” Pollen had been running high in our area so I suggested, “Try some eye drops. It’s probably allergies.” This was followed by screaming, wailing and possible gnashing of teeth. “It hurts! It hurts!” I gave up, got out of bed and checked on her eye, which was swollen and red, and told her I would call the eye doctor first thing in the morning. Her eye doctor took one look at her eye, and immediately connected me with a retina specialist, who agreed to meet us at his office at 10 AM on a Sunday morning. Although it was touch and go for a week, the retina specialist told us our doctor’s quick action saved her vision. Thankfully, we had a regular eye doctor who worked us into his schedule immediately. Unfortunately, a recent survey found one-third (34%) of parents have never taken their child to an eye doctor .
Why do people put off having regular vision checkups for their children? Some parents believe only children who need glasses or contacts need to see any eye doctor, while children with good vision do not. (The American Optometric Association recommends checkups every two years for children with good vision.) Some parents are waiting for their children to tell them about vision problems, and 25% of parents wait until their children have symptoms before scheduling an appointment. From experience, I can say telling the parents probably will not happen. Both Bryan and I have glasses and we both memorized the eye chart in elementary school to keep from having to get a pair!
Want your child to look stylish and protect them from UV rays? Pick up a pair of sunglasses for them! Kids spend more times outside than adults and are exposed to more UV light, which they can not filter as well as an adult. Continued UV exposure over a number of years can lead to eye disease. (And I know we have enough of that in our family!)
