The World Of Coca-Cola

If you live in the South, especially in Georgia, you know the favorite drink is Coca-Cola. Georgia is the home of Coca-Cola, and we’re proud of our heritage. Nowhere is this more evident than at The World of Coca-Cola, an interactive museum dedicated to all things Coke located in Atlanta, Georgia. If you are planning a visit, here’s our Guide To The World of Coca-Cola.

A Guide To The World of Coca-Cola

The History

Coca-Cola was the brainchild of Dr. John S. Pemberton, who began selling the drink a medicinal treatment in 1886. In 1888 Dr. Pemberton sold his business, with the majority of purchased by Atlanta businessman, Asa G. Candler. From here, the business took off, expanding across the globe. Today more than 1.7 billion Coca-Cola products are consumed globally every day. That’s equal to 19,400 beverages every second.

What’s Inside The World of Coca-Cola

Once you step inside The World of Coca-Cola you’ll find a multitude of all things Coke spanning their 131-year history.

Begin your tour in the Lobby, where you can pick up a can of Classic Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Coke Zero Sugar, or Sprite to sip as you wait to begin your tour. While you’re waiting you can learn about the history of several life-sized Coca-Cola bottles. These bottles are scattered throughout the museum and capture iconic Coca-Cola moments.
Coca Cola Vault

The formal tour begins in The Loft and continues in the Coca-Cola Theater. This is the only guided part of the tour and lasts approximately twelve to fifteen minutes. Here’s where a bubbly (pun intended) guide will share the history of the company and some of the artifacts found in the loft. There’s plenty of time to quench your thirst for knowledge during the question and answer section. A short 6-minute film concludes the program. Tip: Bring kleenexes! It’s a tear jerker!

The rest of the tour is self-guided, allowing you to set your own pace, and is covered on two floors. On the first floor, you’ll find the Vault of the Secret Formula, Milestones of Refreshment, Bottle Works, and the Coca-Cola Polar Bear. The only original copy of the Coca-Cola secret formula was brought from Sun Trust bank, where it had resided for over 80 years, to the World of Coca-Cola for their 125th anniversary. While you won’t be able to see the secret formula or bend over the railing separating the vault from the room, you’ll be able to see the highly secured vault and know you’re only a few feet away.

The Milestones of Refreshment takes visitors on a walk through the past, beginning with the inception of Coca-Cola as a medical product by John Pemberton, and ending with the classic refreshment it is today. The Bottle Works gives a behind the scenes view of the process of bottling Coca-Cola, although this is not their bottling facility. While you’re downstairs, have your picture made with the cuddly Coca-Cola polar bear, who first made his television debut 25 years ago during the “Always Coca-Cola” commercials. He was first seen in French print ads as early as 1922 and has been capturing hearts since.
World of Coca-Cola

On the second floor, you’ll find the 4-D Theater, the Coca-Cola Portrait Wall, the Pop Culture Gallery, the Perfect Pauses Theater, and the Taste It! room. Begin with the Coca-Cola Portrait Wall, where you’ll see how Coca-Cola is dedicated to improving the lives of people and animals around the world with projects like the Polar Bear Tracking Program or the Safe Water for Schools Program in Kenya. The Pop Culture Gallery is the perfect place to see how Coca-Cola has evolved over the years and became part of our lives. You can share your favorite Coca-Cola memory or have your picture taken with classic Coca-Cola items and props.

Don’t miss the 4-D Theater, where Jody and Rigsby take visitors on a quest to find “What makes a Coke a Coke.” Be warned, this is a very bumpy ride, with moving seats and other 4-D effects. If the moving seats will bother you for any reason, stick to the row of seats in the back that do not move. After the film, rest for a few minutes in the Perfect Pauses Theater, which captures the most iconic Coca-Cola commercials.

Plan to take a long pause for refreshment in the Taste It room, my favorite room in the World of Coca-Cola. Featuring over 100 Coca-Cola products from around the world, this is one of the few places I can still find my childhood favorite drink, Fanta Cherry. If you want to have a few laughs while you’re there, take a seat on the bench near the wall and watch visitors as they try the Italian beverage, “Beverly.”

End your visit at the Coca-Cola Store– The perfect place to pick up a Coca-Cola souvenir, this shop contains everything from clothing to Coca-Cola themed items for the kitchen. Just be aware that no food or drink is permitted in this area and there is no re-entry to the museum.

Photos are permitted throughout most of The World of Coca-Cola, although visitors cannot take pictures or video of the film in the 4-D theater or in the Coca-Cola theater. You’ll also find professional photographers throughout the museum. These pictures can be purchased in the Coca-Cola store at the end of the tour.

The World of Coca-Cola is across from The Georgia Aquarium and Centennial Park. It’s within an easy walking distance of the College Football Hall of Fame, the CNN center, and the Skyview Atlanta. Once you park you can easily spend the entire day visiting these attractions. Plan to spend two to three hours in the World of Coca-Cola.
