Sweet Rides: Dream Cars Exhibit at High Museum of Art

My family received complimentary tickets to the Southern Hollywood Film Tour    All opinions expressed are my own. Any additional expenses incurred were my own.

The first time I visited The High Museum of Art, I was a sophomore in high school, taking my first high school art class. We saw the special exhibit, though I don’t remember what it was, and spent several hours exploring the rest of the museum with our class. Even though we had to write a paper about our experiences later, the excitement of actually seeing famous artworks in person was enough to overshadow the distaste I had for writing papers. Years later, I finally got the chance to visit the museum again, this time with my mom and husband. We were there to visit the special exhibit, “Dream Cars,” which features some of the coolest concept cars throughout history. While we were there, we also got to check out the rest of the museum and the exhibit in the plaza called “Mi Casa, Your Casa.”

We visited the Dream Cars exhibit first, and let me tell you- it’s a must see for anyone who is remotely interested in cars. I’m not a huge car buff, but I am a sci-fi nerd, and some of these concept cars looked like something out of my favorite books. One of my favorite cars was a French car whose name translates to “The Electric Egg.” It was actually a precursor to the modern Smart Car, and you can tell.

A few other family favorites were the Firebird and the Spyder, which look like a missile car and something from a superhero comic. If none of those sound interesting yet (and how could they not?) there are plenty of other cars in the exhibit. We were able to spend quite a bit of time  just wandering the special exhibit, and could have probably spent hours there if we hadn’t been excited to see the rest of the museum. A word of warning: although cell phone photography is encouraged, you must have a media permit to take photos with a real camera. The sign alerting visitors of this was not in plain sight, so quite a few people had to be gently reminded.

After checking out the Dream Car exhibit, we headed over to the rest of the museum. I couldn’t wait to check out the modern and folk art, and my mom was excited to see some of the more traditional art, including a Monet. There’s really something for everyone at the High Museum! There are even special events for kids. While we were there, kids were able to decorate a small pot with Sharpies and it home. There were plenty of parents and kids having fun with the crafts!

Mi Casa, Su Casa

Outside on the courtyard, another special exhibit was occurring. This one was possibly my favorite, because it’s interactive art and I’m secretly a huge kid. Red house frames jut up in the courtyard, with hammocks, swings, and doors that lead to nowhere set up in the middle of them. The installation is called “Mi Casa, Your Casa,” and is free. Mi Casa, Your Casa is based off the home, and offers a place for people to play, relax, and mingle during the day. At night, it becomes a venue for music and performance art. While we were there, we saw kids playing in the hammocks, and I had to take a rest in one myself! Nearby, there was a photography shoot going on through a butterfly door, and a violinist was playing in the middle of a hammock-less home.

The High Museum of Art in Atlanta is more than just an art museum. It’s part of what keeps Atlanta the cultural capital of the Southeast! It’s family friendly, and they have something for everyone. Whether you’re an art aficionado or just someone looking for a fun day trip with the kids, you’ll love browsing the Dream Cars exhibit with your Tonka-truck obsessed little boy, or checking out the “Mi Casa, Your Casa” exhibit with your whole crew.
