Need some more ideas to keep the St. Patrick’s spirit going?

Try These Ideas:

  • Use the Shamrock Outlines at the bottom of the post to make the “Most Creative Shamrock.” Provide art supplies-crayons, markers, glitter, glue, construction paper, etc., and design a shamrock any leprechaun would be proud of!
  • Have a St. Patrick’s Day Green Challenge.  Give the kids a piece of paper and a pencil. Set a timer for five minutes. Send the kids searching through the house (or classroom) and list all the green items they can find.
  • Research why people get pinched for not wearing green on St. Patrick’s day.
I didn’t know the answer to this one either. There are several different theories, but my favorite is the one I found at the Christian Science Monitor. It describes it as an American tradition that probably dates back to the 1700s. People celebrating St. Patrick’s Day thought wearing green made one invisible to leprechauns. The Leprechauns pinched people they could see, which was anyone not wearing green People began pinching those who didn’t wear green as a reminder that leprechauns liked to sneak up and pinch them.  Personally, it sounds like an excuse to pinch people.
  • Have a St. Patrick’s Day Scavenger Hunt. Hide “Gold Coins” (chocolate covered candies around the house.) Follow the clues to find them all.
  • Make Rainbow Shamrocks. Download a shamrock pattern. Cut squares of different colors of construction paper. Allow kids to glue the paper on the shamrock.

Food Ideas with the Kids:

  • Have a traditional St. Patrick’s Day feast with corned beef, corned cabbage, and soda bread. Listen to Irish music while you eat.
  • Have an easy green snack. Prepare a package of instant vanilla pudding and add a few drops of green food coloring.
  • Have a St. Patrick’s Day breakfast by adding a few drops of green food coloring to your pancake batter.
  • Prepare St. Patrick’s Day Pretzel Treats. Make these Easy Valentine’s Day pretzel treats and substitute green sprinkles for the pastel sprinkles.

Do you and your family celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? What traditions do you have?
