Science Made Fun with Eitech

I try to sneak educational activities into my kids’ lives whenever I get a chance. Just ask my kids who complain to their father every time we go on a trip, “Don’t let Mom take us anywhere educational! This is supposed to be a vacation!” Obviously, my plans succeed better sometimes than others. I’ve spent a lot of time (and money) on toys that encourage learning over the years and one brand I keep returning to is Eitech. Their steel construction sets come in a variety of skill sets, from beginner to adult, and each kit ranges in the number of pieces from 100 to 1000. Even better, the sets encourage the entire family to participate in the construction.

Our track will look like the model on the left when we are done.

Eitech is based in Germany, where the sets are designed, engineered and manufactured. We received a set from their new American line to try, the new  Eitech®  Run and Roll Marble Construction set.  Designed for ages 10+, this set can be built into at least two designs that promote different mechanical functions.  We had mastered basic Eitech sets in the past, so I decided the kids would be up to the challenge of trying this set, which has over 1400 pieces. One of the great things about Eitech products is the detailed instructions, so I knew we would have no surprises and frustrations with the building process.

Because of time constraints on our schedule, we are still in the building process, but this set will be huge when we are finished. It stands over 2 feet tall and has over sixteen feet of winding track.  The pieces are sturdy and well-made too. Believe me, if you ever accidentally step on one of the pieces with bare feet in a darkened room, you will agree! While the set does take 2 AA batteries, which are not included, to run, if you don’t have them on hand when you start construction, you’ll probably have enough time to purchase them before construction is complete.

If you are a homeschool parent or looking for a science fair project, these kits are amazing tools to introduce kids to science and math skills without pressure. The kids will think they are having fun, but will be learning concepts like hand and eye coordination,  basic principles of engineering and mechanics, problem solving and critical thinking.  The kids also helped my daughter develop an interest in science and math, her two most loathed subjects, making me one happy mom.
Quality Steel Construction

If you are new to the Eitech kits, I suggest starting the kids with one of the basic sets before attempting this one. Also, the pieces are small and could be a choking hazard for children under three.  Eitech has encouraged my kids’ curiosity, improved their building skills and given us fun activities to do during family time. Needless to say, this former teacher and homeschool mom is a big fan.
