Savory Cheese and Herb Waffle BLTs Recipe

“Can we have a waffle iron? Can we have a waffle iron? We could have homemade waffles!” That’s the mantra my children have been chanting for years. Thanks to Wayfair, who sent me a Chef’s Choice International Waffle Pro to try for Mother’s Day, my kids have finally gotten their wish. There was much excitement among the kids as they decided what type of waffle they wanted to make. After much debate, they decided to make this Savory Herb and Cheese Waffle recipe we found at Whizzing through Life. They wanted to take it a step further and use the waffles as a basis for a savory BLT. I was impressed with the results of their creation, although not so impressed with the mess they left in the kitchen. These waffles are best served immediately after they are cooked. We made ours soft because that’s our personal preference, but these sandwiches would be great with hard shell waffles too.

A twist on the classic BLT using Savory Cheese Waffles instead of bread.
Ingredients
  • For the Waffles:
  • 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 3/4 cup skim milk
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (your favorite blend, but a stronger cheese will add more flavor)
  • Extra Ingredients Needed:
  • Bacon, 8 to 10 slices, cooked
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato Slices
  • Mayonnaise
Instructions
  1. Heat the waffle iron. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and Italian seasoning. Add the eggs, milk and canola oil to dry ingredients. Whisk until just combined. Then, add cheese. Stir until blended. Pour batter onto heated waffle iron. Prepare as directed.
  2. When the waffle is finished baking and still warm, top with 2 slices bacon, 2 slices tomato and a piece of lettuce. Add mayonnaise as desired. Fold waffle in half and serve immediately.

The Chef’s Choice International Pro Waffle “Five of Hearts” makes waffles into one large waffle that can be easily divided into five hearts for those with small appetites or kids.  Our favorite feature is the “beep” the waffle iron makes when it is completed. The kids knew exactly when to remove the waffles and each batch turned out perfectly. I can’t wait for our next recipe on our Chef’s Choice– Cinnamon Swirl Waffles with Cream Cheese Frosting. I foresee lots of use for our waffle maker, which is compact and easy to clean. I wish I had gotten this years ago when the kids first asked.
