Memories in the Making: Pigeon Forge & Hollywood Wax Museum

Bayou
A view of the Bayou from a past family adventure.

One of my kids’ favorite activities when they were younger was our yearly family trip to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The entire extended family would gather for a weekend of fun activities; shopping for the moms while the dads got to take the kids to various family attractions. (Bryan still complains about the trip where he got bitten by a pony while I was shopping.) We would all meet in the evenings for a family dinner, followed by a group visit to an area attraction or show. We still laugh about the show we attended where my daughter was chosen as the loudest kid from the entire audience. She was invited to appear onstage, where in a fit of shyness; she refused to shake the duck’s foot when offered a chance.

As the years passed and my in-laws grew older, we were no longer able to take our extended family vacations. Lately, the kids have been asking, “When can we visit Pigeon Forge again, Mom?” I looked at the calendar and realized this is the perfect time of year to visit. The leaves in the surrounding mountains are changing into beautiful colors, the scenery is gorgeous and, while it is nippy, it is still warm enough to be outside. “Guess what, kids?” I informed them, “It’s road trip time!” While some of the kids in the family are more excited than others to spend four days cooped up with the family, I’m ready for the break. I’ve been planning activities to keep them occupied, including revisiting favorite sites from when they are younger. Who could resist a visit from the creek my kids spent so much time pushing each other into or a drive through the mountains where Bryan lost our son and was frantically searching for him, only to be reminded he was holding him?

We plan on visiting some new places too. We’ll be taking a trip to the Hollywood Wax Museum. I can’t wait to see who’s there and stand on the VIP Observation Deck to take in the view of the Great Smoky Mountains. It opened in 2012 Have you been to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee? What are your favorite attractions?

It’s so cool you’re planning trips of y’all’s memories, very very cool idea.
