How I Became the Crazy Cat Lady

“Okie, can you get the clothes out of the dryer for me, please?” I ask. My request is followed by total silence.  I look up from the onions I am chopping to see my son staring at me,  “What?” “You called me the cat’s name,” he replied.  “Oh, hmmm,” I said, “since he doesn’t seem to be getting the clothes out of the dryer, can you get them for me?” Later I heard him muttering to Bryan, “When I go off to college Mom will turn into the crazy cat lady.” His father’s response, “I bet she will give your room to the cats,” didn’t seem to reassure him. As much as the rest of the family makes fun of me, they are all devoted to our pets too.  This summer we’ve planned a special vacation and Bryan asked me, “What will we do with the cats when we are gone?” I suggested boarding them for a week. He looked at me in surprise, because we have some special needs cats,  and said, “Don’t you think it might be traumatic  for them for the rest of their lives?” Yes, sure, I am the only one who spoils them.

Does this look like a spoiled cat? Wait! Don’t answer that!

As a Pet Parent, I’ve had my share of crazy adventures over the years, so whenPet Smart shared their new Partners in Pethood videos with me and asked me to share my journey into Pethood, I knew it would be no problem.  If you haven’t seen the commercials of overprotective pet parents, featuring celebrities Anna Faris, Jennifer Coolidge and more, you are missing out.  They’re directed by Christopher Guest (“The Princess Bride”) and share a light hearted look at pet parents.  My favorite quote, “Pethood is just like parenthood, except with more fleas.”

Our pets have done so many funny things, like Trix learning to open the side door that leads into the garage, much to my annoyance. I have to check the garage for cats before I drive the car into the garage. The funniest memory we have is of our cat, Mitzie. We rescued her from the high kill animal shelter when she was a small kitten. She gives new meaning to the phrase, “Scaredy Cat.” Not only is she afraid of everything, she has an allergy we can’t quite determine. One day, as we were running errands, I told Bryan, “We need to stop by PetSmart for a second.” “Sure,” he agreed, “What do we need?” “A shirt for Mitzie.” At his look of disbelief, I told him, “The vet says maybe wearing a shirt will keep her from pulling out all her fur.” He spent the rest of the evening mumbling, “I never, ever thought I would be buying a shirt for a cat.”

I partnered with PetSmart and received gift cards for my participation. However, my love of PetSmart is all my own.
