Eating Our Way Around the Outer Banks, Part II

If you read my Eating Our Way Around the Outer Banks post you know I am a sucker for a good meal. We discovered so many delicious places to eat I had to make a second post to tell you about them all. There is nothing more romantic to me than spending an evening dining on delicious food while overlooking a beautiful view. We found this at Cafe Pamlico at The Inn on Pamlico Sound. Described as “casual fine dining on the water,” Cafe Pamlico boasts fresh ingredients sourced from local farmers. They even grow many of the herbs and vegetables on their own property. Because of this, the menu has frequent changes. During our visit there was an emphasis on beets, including a Lentils and Beet Roots salad, served with goats cheese and rocket.

The outdoor seating, with a view of the Sound is incredible. Who could get tired of looking at his view?
I tried the Bruschetta with Goats cheese, drizzled with honey and the Crab Cakes and recommend both of them. The goats cheese was smooth and tangy, while the crab cakes are moist, flaky and served with a yummy lemon pepper aioli.  One thing that amazed me about Cafe Pamlico was they do no advertising. They base their business on word of mouth referrals and the ability to provide an exceptional experience or they will make it right. Based on their Trip Advisor reviews, rating them number one in the area,  this strategy is working well for them.

We spent another fun evening at the Breakwater Restaurant, located at the Breakwater Island Resort in Hatteras.  Besides the exceptional views of the sunset, if you’ve been out fishing during the day and have a fresh catch, you can bring in your fish and have the chef prepare it for you. How cool is that?  We had not caught any fresh fish, so I settled on the Seafood Medley, a combination of local seafood including shrimp, scallops, fish, and a mini crab cake served with French fries, house made cole slaw and tartar sauce. Available broiled or fried, I chose broiled.

I received a massive portion of tasty seafood, so much that I needed a to go box because I couldn’t finish it all. However, one word of advice, ask to see their dessert menu, “made with love and care by their local pastry chef for years and for years to come.” If you are a fan of peanut butter and chocolate, the Peanut Butter pie is a must. If not, try their Key Lime Pie, prepared in the classic tradition of creamy filling and a smooth meringue topping.
drinks

Before your meal, try one of their refreshing drinks and watch the sunset on the deck.

If you’re in the mood for a night out with friends, the Pangea Tavern in Avon is a great place to relax, chat, and enjoy some tasty pub fare.  While they had an available dinner menu, we chose from the Pub Fare All Day options. I tried the Mellow Mushroom, a wrap made with herb marinated sauteed mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, toasted pine nuts, fresh spinach, Greek feta and balsamic vinaigrette. The flavors mixed together nicely and the wrap was huge. I was only able to eat half of it since I had to save room for dessert, including a Key Lime Pie and a Peanut Butter Pie.  Pangea Tavern is part of the larger Koru Resort and Spa, which caters events and holds a weekly Pirate event during the season. Aimed at kids, the Pirates come out, chase mermaids, and make pictures with the children. This event has a limited number of tickets and sells out quickly so be sure to call in advance of your visit.
