Family Fun with The Kids Obstacle Challenge

Ana is eight. It’s getting hard to impress her. When she was younger, all that it took was a quick trip to a local park. A few minutes on the swings was all it took to make her whole week better. Now, it’s not so simple. What impresses her? Not much. Hover boards, water parks, and roller coasters. Maybe the beach. Oh, and the Kids Obstacle Challenge.

Thanks to Razor for partnering with us. All opinions are our own.

When we were invited to take part in the Kids Obstacle Challenge by Razor, who sponsor the competitive wave of the Kids Obstacle Challenge, we didn’t know what to expect. But since this is an adventure for the whole family, we hopped in the car and drove down to Lanier Islands in Buford, Georgia. Only kids have to register for the race, then parents can run with them for free! Kids receive a goodie bag at the race, filled with Clif bars, bumper stickers, and other cool race swag. The goodie bag was almost as exciting to Ana as the chance to slide into mud!

The Kids Obstacle Challenge ranges between 1.5 miles and 2 miles long. According to a lady standing at the gate with us, our run was two miles. Each challenge course contains between 12 and 15 obstacles. We didn’t count the obstacles during our race since we were too busy going through them. But each obstacle is a fun challenge for kids between ages 5 and 16 and any parent who dares to brave the challenge! I ran the challenge with Ana while my husband stayed back with our toddler and explored Lanier Islands.

You’re supposed to arrive an hour early for the race to register, but the parking situation at Lanier Islands was a little wonky while we were there, so we arrived at the race location a few minutes AFTER our run was supposed to start. The people at the registration desk were incredibly helpful and understanding and got us registered for the next wave pretty quickly. We had a few minutes to take pictures and explore the race area before it was time for us to line up for the course! We were released in waves, from youngest to oldest, to allow younger kids some time to get across obstacles without teenagers breathing down their backs. It worked really well. I actually lost Ana at some point during the race, as she is much more fit than I am. What can I say? My favorite part of the race was the water station in the middle! (Kidding. My favorite part was definitely the metal slide into a mud pit, and so was Ana’s.)

It took us roughly an hour and fifteen minutes to complete the course. Ana went through every obstacle! I went through most. After the race, we were happy to see a rinsing station where we could clean some of the mud off us. We were covered in red mud! A change of clothes and a towel are definitely necessary for this race. Don’t forget to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty! I haven’t been able to get the mud out of my running shorts, which is fine, but it’s something to be aware of.

We left the Kids Obstacle Challenge famished, exhausted, and feeling accomplished. Ana couldn’t stop talking about how much fun she had, and she wore the participation medal she received for the rest of the day. She even sent a Snapchat to one of my friends of her medal.

If you’re looking for a fun activity that gets the whole family active, the Kids Obstacle Challenge is a must. It impressed Ana and kept us busy for the majority of an afternoon.
