Ehler’s Danlos and The Microsoft Surface 2

Microsoft
I received a Microsoft Surface 2 to facilitate my review, but all opinions are my own.

If you read my review last month, you know how much I l love using my Microsoft Surface 2 around the house, but that is only one of the reasons I wanted one of these snazzy little tablets.   No one wants their children to be sick, so when my daughter was diagnosed with hypermobile Ehler’s Danlos syndrome, a rare genetic disease that strikes 1 in 50,000 people and told by her doctor she would no longer live a normal life, I tried to learn how to help her.  Because Ehler’s Danlos causes unstable joints, whenever she used a regular laptop or a desktop computer keyboard the joints in her knuckles would pop out of place, causing severe pain and swelling.  This would result in a trip to the Physical Therapist to reset the joints back into position.  Believe me, we spend a lot of time there, which is another reason I wanted a small, portable tablet.  I can get some work done on my Office 365, saved in Skydrive, while sitting in the doctor’s office.

By now I am sure you are wondering, “How, exactly, does the Microsoft Surface 2 fit into this equation?” With the Microsoft Surface 2 my daughter is able to use the computer again. The thin design, weighing in at  one and a half pounds and only 8.9 millimeters thick, makes it easy for her to carry, an important consideration for someone with chronic muscle and joint pain and tendons that tear at the slightest movement.   The touch screen allows her to move the screen with a simple swipe of her finger rather than pressing buttons and causing joint dislocation.  When she does need a keyboard, to make this like a small laptop, the optional Touch Cover, which comes in fun, funky colors like cyan, purple and magenta, is easier to use than a regular keyboard and works with hardly any pressure on the fingers.

Since we spend a lot of time in the doctor’s office, the MicroSD slot allows her to store her favorite music, videos or movies and take them with her for entertainment.  With over 100,000 apps available from the Windows Store,  she is able to find something to do no matter how bored she gets,  although I have been known to play a mean game of Candy Crush on the Microsoft Surface 2 myself.  Plus, she can watch Netflix and use her headphones so other patrons will not be bothered.  She’s also able to keep in touch with her former college buddies, located 600 miles away, with the unlimited Skype minutes she is receiving for a year.

She’s able to once again spend time on the computer, thanks to the Microsoft Surface 2.

Having the Microsoft Surface 2 allows my daughter to stay connected with friends, family members and have the use of a computer again.  To me, that is priceless.  Have you tried the Microsoft Surface 2?
