Cars, Caves and Cake, Oh My! Bowling Green, Kentucky

Looking for a city with something to interest everyone from car enthusiasts to cooks to outdoor buffs? Bowling Green has it all! Having never been to Bowling Green before, except for passing through,  I only knew it was a mid sized city and home of the Corvette Museum.  Yes, a museum devoted with over 11,000 square feet of space devoted to everything Corvette! With family friendly exhibits, including a hands-on area for kids called the Kidzone,  this attraction made me renew my commitment to getting my own Corvette Dream car.

first corvette
Did you know the 1st Corvette was not a car, but a ship?

The highlight of the Corvette exhibit was the Sinkhole, which appeared February 12th, 2014, and is 33 feet deep and 60’ long and 45’ wide. Eight cars were damaged when the sinkhole opened. All of the cars have been recovered and are in various states of disrepair.

The museum features many rare and valuable Corvettes and a trained staff available to answer any questions on the history.  Be sure to check out the exhibit that allows you to feel the differences in the weight of the hoods!

Duncan Hines
The Duncan Hines Exhibit

History buffs will enjoy the Kentucky Museum, located on the campus of West Kentucky University.  The museum features three floors of exhibits, ranging from a beautiful quilt display to Folk Art  to the history of Kentucky.  The kids will enjoy dressing up in period costumes of the Pioneers and Southern Belles while exploring a Civil War campsite.  There’s also a tribute to native Bowling Green son, Duncan Hines.  I didn’t realize he was a “real person.” The Duncan Hines product line is named after him, but he was not the manufacturer. Instead, he was a respected food critic.

Be sure to visit their furniture collection, featuring antique furniture placed in period settings.  The walls, floor and backdrop are designed to be authentic to the era they belonged right down to the paint colors and floor coverings.
lost river
Anyone who has a taste for outdoor adventure will enjoy the new 2 hour Kayak Tour at Lost River Cave.  Bryan, who had never been in a Kayak before, was put at ease immediately and quickly got the hang of it from our two incredibly patient guides. The tour includes an up close and personal look at the cave formations, tales of folklore and legend and kayak races.  Was Jessie James’ gang really hiding out in this cave? We’ll never know for sure, but legend says yes.  The tour has a minimum of three and a maximum of seven participants, so it is easy to ask questions and explore the hidden recesses. For those of us who are not as adventurous, Lost River has a Cave Boat tour.  Planned as a two part tour, it begins with a walking tour and proceeds to a flat bottomed boat tour, making it the only underground boat tour in Kentucky.  There’s also walking paths and a Bark Park for dogs.
