Beat the Heat with A Sweet Treat!

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! With temperatures around our house spiking up to 113 degrees, we are looking for some serious ways to cool down and beat the heat. We’ve spent time in the neighbor’s pool, splashed each other with the hose, and , my personal favorite, eaten a lot of ice cream. We’ve tried some new varieties and a few classics this summer. The hardest part was choosing which kind we wanted to eat first. The kids were eager volunteers and offered to sample more than one type “for comparison  purposes.”

We started with a six pack of  Reese’s Peanut Butter Ice Cream Cups from Good Humor. They have a smoother, less intense taste than traditional Reese’s Cup, but they are still packed with flavor. I snagged one and left the box in the freezer for the kids and their friends while I ran errands. When I returned I was greeted with, “Do we have anymore of those Reese’s Ice Cream Cups?” (This is why I always snag one before the kids and friends see new snacks.) These new bars are also available in Mounds and York Peppermint Patty.

A new to us brand was Magnum Ice Cream bars. Available in 10 flavors, we tried the Double Caramel, a blend of vanilla ice cream surrounded by chocolate, topped with caramel, and then dipped in Belgium Chocolate. My son tried these first and commented, “These are some quality ice cream bars!” They were good, especially with the gooey caramel, but at $3.00 for 3 bars, I’d hide them in the freezer for a treat for me instead of serving them to all the kid’s friends.

We have eaten Breyer’s ice cream for years but the Waffle Cone with Chocolatey Chips was another new flavor. We usually have Vanilla Bean since Bryan is allergic to chocolate but this one looked too good to resist. There’s chunks of waffle cones covered in fudge, a  plentiful strip of caramel, and chocolate chips. It was like a little bowl of heaven!

A kid pleasing favorite at our home is Jolly Rancher Popsicles. They enjoy the slightly sour, slightly sweet combination of their favorite candy in Popsicle form. The new Awesome Twosome combines two flavors, blue raspberry and cherry  plus grape and  green apple, for two different tasting treats. While they are not a favorite of mine, the kids love them and they are made with 10% fruit juice.

Here’s our last freezer pleaser-Reese’s Kondike bars. Can you tell we like Reese’s peanut butter? My dad purchased a box of these two years ago and we were hooked. We’re also big fans of the Heath Toffee Klondike bars and the What The Fudge? Brownie bars.

What’s in your freezer this summer?

  1. Gia is an ice pop freak! Typically, though, I just buy gallons of ice cream and toppings and let them make what they want – it’s cheaper for me that way

  2. Oh, yum! Between the heat and my allergies, we are running through frozen treats at my house like hot cakes! These all look tempting to me 🙂
