Atlanta Botanical Gardens & Instagram Tips

I live roughly an hour and a half to two hours away from Atlanta and have visited many of the local tourist attractions. I had always planned to visit the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, but never made it until I attended the recent SITsum conference. Opened in 1976, this 30 acre garden is home to a stunning variety of plants. We were in town just in time to capture the final weekend of the Bruce Munro “Lights in the Garden Exhibit.” Before visiting the gardens, I had participated in the #WeLoveATL instagram walk around Midtown Atlanta and picked up tips for capturing eye popping photos.  Here’s some of the scenes from the garden and the walk, along with the two best tips I learned.

  1. Capture Unique Angles. Our first tip was to find different perspectives of looking at objects. Don’t just take a straight forward shot. Take one from the side, get down on your knees, take one from the bottom of an object looking up or grab an extreme close up shot. These types of perspectives add visual interest and capture the objects in an entirely new way.

2. Add action shots of people.  Instead of having people grouped together in a small mass, let the photos tell the a story. Include activity and feature people at unique angles or in motion. I am definitely still working on this one, but did manage to catch some photos of a friend pretending to pop out of a flower bed!

While the garden was beautiful at night, I want to plan a trip to visit it during daylight hours to see their many plant collections.

After visiting the Botanical Gardens, stop by  the adjacent Piedmont Park for beautiful shots of the Altanta skyline. Be sure to bring some bread to feed the ducks!
