Beaumont Inn & Old Owl Tavern, Harrodsburg, Kentucky

It’s always nice to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and visit a historic inn, like the Beaumont Inn in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. This is the oldest owned family bed and breakfast country inn in the state, having belonged to the same family for five generations. Composed of three buildings, the Main Inn, Goddard Hall and Greystone House, the Main Inn was originally a school for girls and later Daughter’s College. It has been transformed into a lovely bed and breakfast, filled with charming antiques and memorabilia from the buildings’ past.  Here’s a fun find: Check in the main hallway to find FDR’s specially built chair he used when visiting the area.

We stayed across the road from the Main building in Goddard Hall. Built in 1935, it boasts 10 guest rooms with queen beds and private baths. Our fun find in this room was the binder of local information assembled by the owner, who added her comments on the attractions with a humorous touch.

For dinner options, we looked no further than The Old Owl Tavern, situated directly across from Goddard Hall. When we arrived around 6 PM, the restaurant was packed. It was a lovely sunny evening so we chose to sit outside on the covered patio. Mr. Dedman, the owner, is a Bourbon expert and has over 70 types of Bourbon available to sample. We skipped the Bourbon and dined on the Black Angus Burger (prepared sans bun for the Celiac) and the Tavern Dinner consisting of a Fried Boneless Chicken Breast and a large slice of Two-Year-Old Kentucky-Cured Country Ham, which was prepared just the way Southern ham should be.

After dinner, we had the option of taking a dip in the pool, strolling around the lovely grounds, browsing through the spacious parlors and gift shop in the Main Inn, or enjoying a spa treatment at the Bell Cottage Spa,

The next morning we had breakfast in the Dining Room at the Main Inn, which had recently won the James Beard Foundation America’s Classic Award, the “Oscars” of the food world.  We were able to eat from the buffet or order from the menu. The corn cakes, a twist on traditional pancakes had been highly recommended to us by the locals so I had to try them, along with another slice of the Country Ham.  Brittany chose the cheese grits. Grits are always a risk, because if they are not prepared properly they do not taste good. These grits passes the taste test with flying colors!
