Walking on Sunshine in the Outer Banks

There is nothing more relaxing to me than spending a week at the beach, especially when I can enjoy it from a gorgeous  ocean front beach house like Walkin’ on Sunshine from Hatteras Realty in Avon.  Although there were only five of us, this house has four floors and sleeps twenty-two.  We couldn’t wait to explore the house, which included eight bedrooms, seven full bathrooms plus several half baths, a game room,  an office, a movie room, several family rooms, a dining room and a double kitchen.  I really want this kitchen in my house!  From the wrap around decks on each floor we were treated to an amazing view of the ocean and the patio down below the house, which included a swimming pool, hot tub, putting green and outdoor dining room.  A handy private gate led directly to the beach access walkway.

My room had a screened door leading directly onto the wrap around porch, allowing me to open the door and listen to the waves or drag up a chair and watch the sunrise or sunset. This would be the perfect getaway destination for a large extended family or a family reunion, with plenty of activities to please everyone.

Even though we were able to spend cozy evenings gathered together in the family room or mornings together at the bar in the kitchen, Walking on Sunshine offered us ample private time. Each bedroom had its own television with cable where we could escape to relax or to work, using the provided wifi.  Although there are several staircases in the house, it is handicapped accessible via the elevator.

We were sad to depart from Walkin’ on Sunshine. I’m already attempting to talk my entire family into a return trip! From there we traveled to nearby Duck, North Carolina to visit the Sanderling Resort.  Designed to host everything from romantic weekend getaways to family fun, this four star property is located directly on the Atlantic Ocean.  Boasting two pools, one for kids and one for adults, spa services and fine dining,  we spent a relaxing afternoon touring the grounds and walking along the shore.

My room had a walk out deck, a cozy breakfast nook and an amazing bathroom. I wanted to take the rain forest shower home with me.  My favorite activity at the resort was the nightly fire-pit, where guests were offered S’mores kits and a stick to roast marshmallows. The weather had turned chilly and it was the perfect evening to gather around the fire, chat and make S’mores.

We had dinner at Kimball’s, the resort restaurant, and Chef John Botkin came out to chat with us, sharing the secret of how to make their famous Brussel Sprouts and one of their signature drinks.  I had a succulent steak, topped with blue cheese, and we shared side dishes, including the Potato Puree, Asparagus, Lobster Ravioli and the Brussel Sprouts. I recommend sharing the side dishes because the entree portions are huge.  Don’t forget to ask for a dessert menu; the chocolate lava cake is to die for.  Their menu includes a variety of fresh seafood and an award winning wine list.
