A Back to School Family Dinner

Food=Love. Or at least that’s the way it seems in the South.  Family or friends coming in from out of town? Invite everyone over for a potluck dinner! Holiday coming up? Plan a dinner. Birthdays, promotions, anything that calls for celebration? Have dinner out with the family.  Naturally,  because my son is leaving for college this weekend, we planned a goodbye celebration. This one was bittersweet because this was his last summer at home. In the future all of his summers will be spent working at internships.  We’re big seafood lovers, so we decided it was a great time to end the summer with  a journey to Crabfest at Red Lobster.
Crabfest 2016

What is the journey to Crabfest and why were we eager to take it?
The story of Crabfest starts at the source , the wild Alaskan waters, and leads straight to the plate of tempting Crabfest dishes.

Between the five of us we were able to sample lots of different options.  Since Brittany was introduced to her new favorite food, Elote, she’s always on the lookout for it.  She was thrilled to see the new Grilled Parmesan Corn with cilantro-lime butter on the menu.  Actual comment- “I wonder if I could just have unlimited corn?” She was joking. I think.
Grilled Corn

The rest of us started with Crab Fritters, a  concoction of Panko-crusted crab fritters served on a layer of french fries and with a side of Meyer lemon aioli.
Crab Fritters

It was hard to choose entrees, as we all have different tastes, but we finally narrowed it down to different choices and the offer to let each other have a sample “taste” of each of our dishes.  Because Crabfest was back for a limited time,  I knew I had to choose one of their new entrees.  Right now they have the largest  variety of crab dishes ever offered on the menu, and I am not one to turn down crab when I have a chance.
Crab Lovers Feast

I finally settled on the Crab Lover’s Dream™ featuring  wild-caught North American snow crab legs and king crab legs, paired with Red Lobster’s signature crab linguini Alfredo. For a crab lover, it’s like crab overload.  If you are like me and didn’t realize the difference between various types of crab, snow crab is know for large clusters of snowy-white meat with a sweet flavor and king crab (the largest of Alaska’s 3 crab species, has leg meat known for rich flavor and tender texture.   Not sure how to crack those crab legs? Chef Heidi shows you how here.
Shrimp Your Way

Other new options include the Alaska Bairdi (pronounced bear-dye) Crab Legs Dinner,  a generous portion of premium, wild-caught Alaska Bairdi crab legs, served with Chesapeake-grilled corn on the cob, and Crab Cakes & Crab-Oscar Salmon, featuring seasonal, wild-caught salmon fresh from the waters of Alaska.
Grilled Shrimp

Also on our menu was the Shrimp Your Way, which included three kinds of shrimp of your choice. It’s on special Monday and Tuesdays and is a shrimp lover’s paradise.  Shrimp scampi, jumbo fried shrimp, coconut shrimp–oh, yeah.  The 4-Course feast offered temptations as well, but we finally settled on the Garlic Grilled Shrimp and Shrimp Linguini Alfredo.
Cheddar Biscuits

If you are in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area and visit the location beside Hamilton Place mall, be sure to ask for Michelle. Our server was a treat! Not only was she attentive and personable, she asked us immediately if we were celebrating any occasions. When she discovered it was a back to college celebration, she asked questions about his school, brought his dessert with a candle and stopped by before we left to wish him success on his college career.  She made an enjoyable evening even better.
