How to Make Your Own Media Kit

Sometimes PR reps will ask for your “media kit.” If you are like me, the first time you heard this you thought, “Huh?” I knew they were asking for stats,  but what did they mean by media kit? After some research, I found out all the items you need to make a successful media kit.
How To Make a Media Kit For Bloggers

To begin, I suggest either getting a free template or purchasing one. Plan on either a one-page or two-page media kit. One is best because it allows PR reps and companies to scan it quickly. Here’s a link to one you can download and change to include your information for free. You can also make your own on PicMonkey or Canva for free.

Here’s some things to include to make a successful media kit.

1. An about me section including the mission (or purpose) of your blog. 
This tells a little about you personally. Are you a stay at home mom? Work at home mom? Work outside the home? Do you have kids? What are there ages? (toddlers, teens, preteens?) Do you have pets? What kind? How many?  What is the purpose of your blog? What do you usually blog about?
Tip: Don’t get carried away telling about yourself and your blog. This can be a one to two (short) paragraph post.  Write in 3rd person.

2.  Your blog Logo and contact information.  Place your blog logo and a photo of yourself either at or near the top.  PR Reps like to see who they’re working with! Add your blog link, email, address, and phone number.

3. Audience Parameters
Who are the primary readers of your blog? Moms? Do they have kids? What ages are the kids? Men? People who like to cook? What types of recipes do they like?  What are their ages? Are they college-educated? Include all this information. Mine simply says,
“Audience Demographics:
Female 80%, Male 20%
Age Range: 20-55

4. Your Blog Stats.  Include your average monthly page views, your average unique monthly views (how many people visited your blog). The numbers will be different.

4. Your Social Media Presence.  Be sure to highlight the number of people who follow you on your twitter, Instagram, Facebook,  and Pinterest, along with your email subscribers.

5. Partnerships and Opportunities with Your site.  These can include brand ambassadorships, travel, press or media trips, recipe creation, sponsored content, social campaigns, twitter parties,  and reviews or giveaways. Decide what you want to focus on. You don’t have to do them all!

SPECIAL NOTE IF YOU DO REVIEWS AND GIVEAWAYS:  Include the following: 
What are your policies for reviews and giveaways? Do you expect a full-size product in return for a review? Do you charge to host reviews or giveaways? Do you give your honest opinion of the product? (The honest opinion is a given, but some companies don’t want bad reviews. Reserve the right to return to them and tell them nicely why the product wasn’t a good fit for you or your family and not publish the review.) How long does it take for the review to appear on your site after you receive the product? If you do giveaways, ask for the company to ship the product. Shipping costs add up quickly!

7. Your rates.  How much do you charge for a sponsored post?  How much do you charge for twitter parties or social media campaigns? Include a little information about your posting policies, like 300 to 500 words, including 1-2 no-follow links with anchor text.

8. Testimonials
Add a couple of quotes from people who have worked with you and enjoyed the experience.

9. A Graphic of Companies You Have Worked With.  I include companies I am an ambassador for or work with on a regular basis.

You can make a blog post or a blog page with this information if you want. Be sure to make it easy to find with a link in your sidebar or at the top of the page in your navbar. I prefer to have a separate page I can quickly pull up and email when anyone asks for more information.

All of these things might not apply if you’re a newbie blogger, but it’s never to early to start a media kit! Remember to UPDATE REGULARLY as your site grows or at least twice a year.
