How To Make Your Own Exfoliating Skin Scrub

I’ve never been a huge fan of winter. I don’t like cold temperatures and an inch of snow in our area means everything comes to a halt.  Even worse, I suffer from dry cracked skin in the winter unless I spend a lot of time moisturizing and exfoliating. This added up to a serious chunk of change I was spending on lotions and scrubs.  Several years ago I found a great scrub recipe that moisturizes and exfoliates, but costs around a dollar to make.  Best of all, I could make it in any scent I want.  This recipe only has three ingredients. If you don’t have any essential oil, you can just use a teaspoon of extract of your choice. I like using essential oil because of all the varieties available.

You’ll need petroleum jelly, epsom salts, and essential oil in the scent of your choice. I’ve included a list of scents and their uses below:
For a relaxing exfoliating scrub: use lavender or chamomile
For an energizing scrub use peppermint, spearmint or rosemary
For a scrub to help relieve stuffy noses: Eucalyptus (I have a  recipe for DIY Soothing Sinus Salt Scrub here  It’s a favorite in our family.

Mix the petroleum jelly with the epsom salts until blended.  Add three to five drops of essential oil and stir. You can adjust the amount of essential oil in the mixture to your preference. Like a lightly scented scrub? Use less.  Love a strong, refreshing scrub? Use more. If you are allergic to fragrance,  leave it out.

Once the scrub is blended, store in a tightly covered jar. I like to use small mason jars because they look pretty. You can use the scrub on dry patches or all over your body, but don’t use it on your face. It is a little too harsh.  This can also be used as a lip scrub, but only use it once or twice a week.
