How to Make an Easy Marshmallow Snowman

Winter has swept into our area with record-breaking cold.  The days outside vary from gray and gloomy to sunny but breath sucking cold.  Either way, I am not feeling it. I prefer to stay inside with a glass of cocoa and a good book. (Or my laptop. I’m not picky.)  Of course, we have to top our cocoa with marshmallows.  Regular marshmallows are fine, but sometimes, to give me and the kids an added treat, I make these Easy Marshmallow Snowman. The great thing about these snowmen is they don’t have to look perfect.  Even young kids can decorate them and tell everyone they helped cook. They’re gluten-free and surprisingly, dairy-free so everyone can enjoy them. If you happen to have a peanut butter allergy, the mini peanut butter cup hats can be substituted with mini candy chocolate marshmallow cups. You can’t go wrong with more marshmallows!

How to Make Easy Marshmallow Snowmen

This recipe is easy to double or triple. I started with four regular size marshmallows, a small tube of black decorator icing, an orange gumdrop, 2 mini peanut butter cups, and two snowflake sprinkles for decoration. I also used 1/4 teaspoon vanilla icing as “glue.” Tip:  Don’t use jumbo marshmallows, they are too big. I used a wooden skewer to make these marshmallow snowmen, but if you have younger children you could use a straw, although it will be more difficult.  I began to threading two marshmallows on each skewer and topping it with a mini peanut butter cup.

I used black writing icing (available in the baking section of almost any grocery store) to make three horizontal dots on the bottom marshmallow.  Then I made two dots for eyes and several dots, approximately seven, for the mouth. Helpful hint-gently squeeze and then lift up the tube before making another dot. If not, the dots will smear.

Pinch off a small piece of the orange gumdrop and roll it into a nose shape. I used about 1/8 of a small gumdrop for each nose.  Spread a small dot of frosting onto the back of the gumdrop “nose” and place onto the top marshmallow. To add a small splash of color to the hat, I used a snowflake sprinkle, attached with a small dot of icing.  Allow the nose and snowflake, if you are using one, to dry before placing the snowman in the cocoa. Drying time should only take a minute or two.
