Glory Bound Gyro: A College Town Treat

It’s hard to find gluten friendly restaurant options while you travel. It’s even harder to find gluten friendly restaurant options while you travel that also please the non-celiacs in the family. That’s why, while on a trip to my son’s college orientation, we were happy to find Glory Bound Gyro Company in Tuscaloosa, Alabama through Restaurant.com. When we walked in, it was easy to tell that we were in a college town, because there were few people there in the summer and the waitress informed us that they were understaffed the day we visited. There’s a full bar and some fun cocktail options if that’s your thing, but we were there for one thing: some delicious gyros.

Between the four of us, we ordered a Comeback Gyro, the BBQ Mushroom Gyro, the Gyro Platter, and the gluten free Grilled Chicken Gyro. The gluten free Grilled Chicken Gyro consisted of lettuce, tomato, grilled chicken, and honey mustard sauce without a pita. It came with veggies and the hummus my daughter had chosen, which was olive flavored. She thought she would miss the pita, but she really didn’t! The serving size was large and she left stuffed. The star of her meal was definitely the olive hummus. She could’ve eaten several more servings of it!

The Gyro plate was beef and lamb gyro meat, original hummus, warm pita bread, lettuce, sautéed onions, homemade tzatziki and grilled veggies. It wound up being too much food for me and I had to share with my son, who was not complaining about getting extra gyro. I finished off her hummus- butI switched out the original for garlic flavored. It was very garlicky, so if you want to try it, bring gum.

Ashton and Bryan both opted for hamburger gyro options. The Comeback Gyro was seasoned hamburger meat with pepperjack cheese, lettuce, onions, bacon, and “comeback sauce.” The BBQ Mushroom Gyro was seasoned hamburger meat, feta cheese, barbecue sauce, lettuce, sautéed mushrooms, and onions. They were both served in a pita and came with fries. The fries were okay, but the gyros were the big hit.

The only complaint about Glory Bound Gyro Company was the long wait to get our food, but we were warned that the restaurant was under-staffed, and the waitress was very apologetic. It also took a while to get drink refills, probably for the same reason. We were in Tuscaloosa during the off season, so I’m sure Glory Bound Gyro Company is usually much faster and much fuller.

If you’re looking for some good gyros and gluten free options in Tuscaloosa, Glory Bound is the place to go. Check out the gyro platters or get a hummus sampler- just don’t expect it to be authentic Greek food. It doesn’t claim to be authentic, just tasty.

I absolutely miss Greek food. For some reason the area we moved to over a year ago has no Greek restaurants. If I could cook it I would open one to show them what they are missing here.

Gyros aren’t big around these parts, but I sure do love them. We have lots of sub shops here 🙂
