Four Tips to Ease the Back to School Transition

I am a member of the #CapriSunCrew and have been compensated for my participation. However, our love of Capri Sun is all our own!

Going back to school after a carefree summer can be stressful for kids of all ages. It can even be stressful for adults! I remember the jitters I got each year before my first day of teaching a new group of children. Over the years I’ve learned some steps that helped children adjust to the first few weeks of school with less fuss.  Believe me when I say your child and his teacher will appreciate an easier transition!

  1. Plan a “Back to School” family day or night. This doesn’t have to be anything fancy. I’ve planned a day where I took the kids and a couple of friends to the park for a picnic or had a family movie night with homemade pizza. We discussed what the kids hoped to learn in the new school year, what they were looking forward to, and anything else to get them excited about the big day.

  2. For young children, pack a special lunch or note in their backpack.  I made the kids crust-less sandwiches with faces out of fruit and tucked a note saying, “Have a great day!” into their lunchbox when they were younger. They appreciated the reminder and always looked forward to seeing their special treat.

  3. For older children going away to college, send them care packages. With my son leaving for college this year, he has already requested I send him care packages.  “You know what’s good in care packages, Mom? Lots of food.” I made him this “Out of the Blue” care package and included all blue items he could use, including some pouches of Capri Sun for a touch of nostalgia.

  4. Prepare a list of “on the go” breakfast foods and keep the ingredients on hand. My daughter, who believed she should be able to get up at 7:40 to make it to school at 8:05, always wanted to rush out the door without eating. I started making freezer meals she could heat in minutes and keeping the ingredients for smoothies she could drink on the way. (If you need a recipe for a delicious and different smoothie, check out this recipe for a Capri Sun smoothie. These also work great as an afterschool snack when the kids come home starving.)

Do you have any tips on making the transition back to school easier? I’d love to hear them.

  1. We need that transition to go as smoothly as possible and these are awesome tips. I also do smoothies and freezer sandwiches to be reheated in the morning. It definitely helps to keep things a little calmer at breakfast.

  2. I love the idea of an out of the blue care package! We just went back this week and it’s been a rough adjustment.

  3. These are great ideas. My kids are starting kindergarten and preschool. They’re both pretty excited!

  4. These are great tips. I love Capri Sun smoothies. We like to start our day off with a delicious smoothie.

  5. I’ve been doing lunchbox notes for my son! I know he’s been super nervous about 1st grade. Thanks for the tips

  6. Megan @ C'mon Get Crafty

All these back to school posts have me contemplating the next few years. J will start kindergarten next year, and I’ll officially have a school-age child. Crazy!

  7. These are all great tips. I remember being in college and getting care packages and it was the best thing ever.

  8. Getting back into routines has been tough. The kids are doing great, but I think I could use a nap!

  9. I love the idea of a family back to school day or party. Our schools do an ice cream social the night before school starts which helps too but doing some special end of summer activities is great.

  10. My hubby sent me homemade cookies when I was in Korea, making me realize how nice it is to get a care package when you’re away from home and family (and yes, I shared). Capri Sun is always a delicious drink to have along for lunches or while travelling. The care package you made is very clever and appealing.

  11. I love the idea of fast and easy breakfast foods, as well as after school snacks. This is our first week back to school and I am having a harder time than my kids!

That Capri Sun smoothie sounds so tasty! Getting back into the school routine can be so hard.

  13. A back to school basket is real good for the students heading to college. I like a special lunch also.

  14. These are great tips Pam! We started back to school last week and I am still struggling to get on top of things.

  15. Back to school time can be so stressful. I like the idea of getting together with family and friends.

  16. Awe, my Mom used to send me care packages when I wa in College, and to my brother as well when he was in Basic Training. I love that she would pack in all our favorite treats, and sweet little notes!

  17. These are all great tips. I think the biggest thing for my son was starting his bedtime routine 2 weeks before. By the time school started he was use to getting up and going to bed early.

  18. I always liked putting together care packages for the kids. I think that Capri Sun smoothie looks awesome!

  19. We went to a back to school event at my client’s party space in Johns Creek, Ga and our son loved it. He wasn’t THAT excited about the school year for some reason. I think it’s because his best little buddy moved out of state. He misses her terribly!
