The eero Wi-fi System Review for NonTech People

“Your internet stinks, Mom!” My kids let me know this fact whenever they are home.  It’s frustrating because we pay for high speed internet, but the speed drops dramatically from one end of the house to the other. “You know what this house needs?” I told my family, “A better router and wi-fi extender.”  Don’t get me wrong. We had a pricey extended range router plus their  pricey extender.  We also had dead spots, glitches, internet outages and buffering even though we paid for high speed connection.  I wasn’t sure what to do until we received an eero  Wifi system.

Our house is smallish, at 2300 square feet, so I wasn’t sure why we were having problems. Our long suffering internet repair person (who has been to my house often enough to start recommending websites I need to visit) tells me it is because our house is “made of solid construction and it’s difficult for the signals to pass through the walls.”  As for as our 800 square foot patio/”outdoor room” we finished this summer, whenever I tried to relax and work outside, forget it.  I needed something that worked.  Enter the eero Wifi System.

Eero promised “No more buffering. No more dead zones.” Wifi that is simple to set up and easy to manage.  Naturally, I couldn’t wait to put this to the test.  Eero is different from traditional routers and extenders because it  works as a system.  One router is plugged into the modem, while the others are plugged into a standard outlet throughout the house, creating a “mesh router system.”

The eero Wi-Fi System Review (for nontechy people):
1. eero Set Up: The system promises easy set-up but I, as a nontechy set up person, was still worried. I began by downloading the app onto my iPhone, which walked me through the process with step by step instructions. The app gives tips on where to place the extra eeros and registers them in each room. I chose “office,” “bedroom” and “family room.” I panicked a bit when “forgetting my old network,” but I didn’t need to worry. I set up three eeros in less than ten minutes and was back on the internet ready to work.   Once the initial eero is installed, the other eeros only needed to be plugged in. I waited until the light turned blue on the device and then clicked “setup” on the app. The rest was done for me. Easy-peasy. The eero does recommend the devices be placed no more than 40 feet apart and in “line of sight.”

2. The eero App: Once the eeros are installed, the app does amazing things. It can run speed tests on the eero, letting us know the amount of download mpbs, upload mpbs and number of devices connected to the network.  It allows me to add people to our guest network with no hassle, no sharing passwords or other pesky problems.

3. eero Protection: With traditional routers it’s hard to get software updates. The “eero is protected with state-of-the-art WPA2 encryption.”  Because the app controls the hardware and the software for your entire network, it updates automatically so that you not only have the latest features and the latest security.

4.  Parental Controls: Allows you to limit the amount of time family members spend on the internet. You’re able to turn it off for bedtime if you have sneaky kids who like to text into the middle of the night. I speak from experience on this.

5. Sleek, compact design.  The eero boxes are small, square white boxes approximately an inch high. They are inconspicuous and blend into the background where I have placed them around the house.

The Downside is the start up costs. A package of three eeros costs $499.99 or a single eero can be purchased for $199.00.  This is an investment that’s worth it if you use a lot of devices on your network, like to play games or stream tv shows and music,  upload videos, or use the computer for business. Casual internet surfers who are only online to check email or Facebook  won’t see the value.

You can learn more about eero by visiting their website, or getting social with them on Facebook and Twitter.

  23. We have issues with wifi at my house too. Our home is also made of “solid construction”, which is a great problem to have, right?! We often have issues, especially when everyone is trying to connect at once, or when my son is in his room at the far end of the house trying to game.
