Make Your Own Flavored Popcorn Recipe for Movie Night

Make your own flavored popcorn

With the weather in Georgia doing freaky things, like snow and ice storms, we’ve been stuck in the house for days on end, giving us plenty of time to try new ideas. My son has always been a huge fan of flavored popcorn, but I haven’t been a huge fan of the price. The last time I decided to stop in a store and surprise the kids with a batch, I took one look at the $20 a pound price tag and decided they could do without. Having plenty of time on my hands during the snow storm allowed me to search for a flavored popcorn recipe.  When I found it I couldn’t believe how easy it was to whip up a batch for a fraction of the cost.  Can you believe the “secret” is flavored gelatin?  I halved the amount of popcorn used and kept the amount of gelatin in my picture above which made mine very sweet and a darker color. The next time I make the popcorn I will follow the directions exactly.  You can use any flavor of gelatin you want and mix it up to make a rainbow of flavors. If you want to get fancy, throw in some nuts or candy. The original recipe also called for baking the popcorn 10 minutes after the gelatin mixture was added.  I recommend not doing this because the popcorn will burn. No one likes burnt popcorn, except maybe the birds.

  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine

Add gelatin and pour the gelatin mixture over the popcorn. Mix until the popcorn is evenly coated. Allow to set for fifteen minutes before serving.

We created a DIY Popcorn Bar a It was a lifesaver because not only were we snowed in, we caught the flu. Seriously, how lucky were we to have both of these things happen at once?  If you are looking for some movies to watch with your family, why not try some of these titles that help teach kids  about inspiration, teamwork and competition?

What are your favorite indoor activities for snowy days? Please share them with me!
