Chocolate Caramel Pretzel Rods Recipe (CopyCat Twix Bars)

I have always been bitten by the traveling bug. When I spend too much time at home, I get antsy and start planning day trips for my family. That’s how I found myself standing in an apple barn in Elijay, Georgia while the kids tried to pick out a treat for themselves. My son found some chocolate caramel pretzel rods and told me, “Look, Mom! These are on sale for 1/2 price!” (I really have trained my kids well when it comes to saving.) I still thought the pretzels were a little pricey, at 4 pretzel rods for $3, when the cashier piped up, “I love these! They are so good! They’re like a Twix candy bar, only better.” After taste testing, I had to agree. When we got into the car, I announced, “I could make these myself a lot cheaper!” Thus, my copycat Twix recipe was formed. I made my version for St. Patrick’s Day, but you could customize these for any holiday.

I used white chocolate bark, since Bryan is allergic to chocolate, but feel free to mix it up; white chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, any of these would work.  These pretzel rods are fairly easy to make, but take a little time due to having to freeze the pretzels between steps.  I made 20 pretzel rods for around $8 and everyone thought mine was just as tasty as the purchased pretzels.

Chocolate Caramel Pretzel Rods Recipe (CopyCat Twix Bars)
Ingredients
  • 20 Pretzel Rods
  • 1 bag (12 ounces) chocolate of your choice (white, dark, milk)
  • 1 package (9 ounces) caramels, unwrapped
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Optional: 3 ounces of colored chocolate bark, your choice of color to match the holiday.
Instructions
  1. Melt caramels and cream over low heat, stirring frequently, until caramel is melted. Dip each pretzel rod into the caramel mixture and place onto a baking sheet lined with wax paper or parchment paper. Freeze until caramel mixture is firm, at least one hour. Melt the chocolate in the microwave for one minute, stir. If not completely melted, return to the microwave for 30 more seconds. Dip each caramel coated pretzel into the chocolate and return to the wax paper covered baking sheet. Freeze until firm, or at least 30 minutes. Melt colored chocolate bark, if desired, in microwave and drizzle over the chocolate covered pretzel rod.

Be sure to store the pretzel rods in an airtight container or they will go stale quickly, leaving you stuck with complaining family members who think “these pretzels are kind of stale.”  Do you have an easy, favorite copycat recipe?
