Cashew Vegan Cafe, Chattanooga, Tennessee

My husband, the baby, and I have a routine every Saturday. First, we attend Baby Bounce at the local library. After that, we go to brunch. Since I’m gluten free and the baby is dairy and soy free, it can be hard to find new places to eat. After seeing an ad for a local vegan cafe on Facebook, we decided to get out of our comfort zone and try it out.

We visit Cashew Vegan Cafe, entirely on our own, every Saturday. All food is paid for by us.

Cashew Vegan Cafe is located at Coolidge Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It’s tucked into the lower level of a row of shops, so it can be easy to miss. It’s a small space, decorated with rustic wooden tables with fresh flowers. When you walk in, you immediately see the counter, covered in cases of baked goods, and a cooler of pre-made food and dressings. When we arrived, we weren’t sure what to do, so we approached the counter. The cashier offered us a menu, and told us that if we wanted to dine in, we could sit anywhere we liked.

After we sat down, she came and took our drink order and brought a highchair. We browsed the menu, which was mostly gluten free. All but two of the items on the regular menu were or could be made gluten free!

Justin and I both decided on the buffalo bowl, which featured brown rice, pinto beans, garlicky kale, shredded carrot, buffalo tofu, and vegan ranch dressing. The buffalo bowls were tasty and filling, but the star of the show was the dessert. We ordered three donuts: lemon, chocolate sprinkle, and PB&J. The donuts were gluten, dairy, and soy free, so Jenna and I could both enjoy them. It was Jenna’s first donut, and she loved it! I can see Cashew becoming a regular in our brunch rotation based on the donuts alone. That said, don’t rule out the main dishes. Even Justin, a dedicated carnivore, raved about the buffalo tofu that we ate.

Entree prices at Cashew range between $7 and $13. This is about average for gluten free and vegan food in the area, and portions are large. Food is available for dine-in, or can be ordered to go, which is perfect for picnicking in Coolidge Park. Cashew also has a case with pre-made food, desserts, and Whole 30 approved dressings to enjoy at home.
